Listen to Me explores the exhaustion of speaking and still not being heard.
As women—and particularly as Black women—we are often expected to endure quietly. When we speak, our voices may be overlooked. When we speak louder, instead of being heard more clearly, we can be dismissed, judged, or reduced to the way we expressed ourselves rather than the truth of what we were trying to say.
The covered mouth represents that contradiction: having a voice, having something to say, yet feeling as though silence has already been chosen for you.
There is also an expectation to carry—to remain strong, to keep going, to endure without complaint. But strength should not require silence.
Listen to Me is both a plea and a demand: not simply to hear the sound of our voices, but to recognize the experiences, emotions, and truths behind them.
